A 1540 fortress ruins with Morocco's first cable car and breathtaking sunset views over the bay.
The Kasbah of Agadir Oufella is the city's most iconic landmark, perched on a hilltop 236 meters (1,756 feet) above the bay. Built in 1540 by the Saadian dynasty, this fortress once protected the city from Portuguese and European invasions. The 1960 earthquake that destroyed 80% of Agadir left only the kasbah's massive walls, towers, and monumental gate (Bab Agadir) standing. Today, the ruins serve as a poignant memorial to the old city and offer the most spectacular panoramic views of Agadir, the harbor, the Atlantic coast, and the Anti-Atlas Mountains. The inscription above the main gate reads in Arabic: 'God, Homeland, King.' The site is especially popular at sunset when the golden light illuminates the bay and city below. To reach the kasbah, you can take the modern Agadir Cable Car (Téléphérique) - Morocco's first cable car system - which rises from the Marina district to the kasbah in just 6-8 minutes, offering stunning aerial views along the way. Alternatively, adventurous visitors can hike up the hill (about 30-40 minutes). At the top, there is a small café for refreshments. The kasbah is one of Agadir's only surviving historic buildings and is listed as a national heritage site[citation:1][citation:4][citation:9].
