A walled 16th-century city with silver jewelry, rampart walks, souks, and nearby oasis village.
Taroudant is a charming walled city located approximately 80 km east of Agadir (about 1.5 hours by road). Often called 'Little Marrakech' because of its ancient ramparts (5 km of perfectly preserved 16th-century walls) and bustling souks, Taroudant offers a glimpse of authentic Moroccan life without the intensity of the larger cities. The city is known for its silver jewelry (Taroudant is Morocco's silver capital), leather goods, carpets, and argan products. The medina is compact, walkable, and far less touristy than Marrakech or Fes. Highlights include: walking along the 16th-century ramparts (you can even walk on top of some sections), visiting the Spice Souk (where vendors sell pyramid mounds of saffron, cumin, and ras el hanout), exploring the artisan quarter, and seeing the Grand Mosque. Just outside town, the village of Tiout offers an oasis palm grove where you can ride a donkey cart, visit a traditional Berber home for lunch, and see the old kasbah featured in classic Moroccan films. Many day trips from Agadir combine Taroudant with Tiout, including transportation, guide, breakfast, and lunch in a Berber home[citation:8].
