Annual May festival celebrating global sacred music in Fes's most beautiful historic venues.
The annual Festival of World Sacred Music (Fès Festival de Musique Sacrée) is one of Morocco's most prestigious cultural events, established in 1994 by Moroccan philanthropist Faouzi Skali following the Gulf War to promote intercultural and interfaith dialogue. Held each May (typically over 7-10 days), the festival brings together extraordinary performers from around the globe: Sufi harmonic ensembles, Persian poets, whirling dervishes, West African griots, American gospel singers, Spanish flamenco dancers, European sopranos, and Fes's own highly respected Arabo-Andalucian Orchestra. Performances take place in stunning historic venues across the city - the Bab Makina courtyard, the Batha Museum gardens, the Royal Golf courses, and various palaces and riads. The opening and closing nights are attended by dignitaries and showcase a mix of different performances. The festival completely transforms Fes, filling the medina with music and visitors from around the world. Outside the festival period (most of the year), live music can still be heard at Cafe Clock, which hosts weekly Gnawa and Andalusian performances. The festival's success has inspired sister events in other countries, and it's a UNESCO-recognized model for cultural dialogue. Book accommodations and tickets MONTHS in advance if planning to attend[citation:7].
