Morocco's finest artisanal souks with ceramics, leather, carpets, lanterns, and spices.
Fes is the undisputed artisanal capital of Morocco - its network of souks offers higher quality craftwork than anywhere else in the country, as Fes has been the imperial artisan center for over a millennium. The main thoroughfare, Talaa Kebira, is lined with shops selling hand-painted ceramics (pottery from R'Cif), terracotta tagine dishes, cedarwood hammam buckets, hand-embroidered linens, Berber silver jewelry, leather babouche (slippers), hand-knotted carpets, and Aladdin-style antiques. From Talaa Kebira, branch into specialist souks: the Dyers Souk (Souk Sabaghine) where workers with stained arms dye wool and silk using saffron, indigo, hibiscus, and henna; Foudouk Kaat Smet (honey and fermented butter market); the Henna Souk for cosmetics, kohl, and traditional poppy powder lipstick; Chemmaine Souk with pyramids of dried fruit, seeds, and nuts; and the spectacular copper smiths of Place Seffarine, where the rhythmic hammering of craftsmen shaping giant cooking pots, etched brass mirrors, silver tea services, and filigreed lanterns fills the air. Bargaining is expected - start at 1/3 of the asking price. The souks are most active from 9 AM to 1 PM and again from 3 PM to 8 PM. Friday prayers (1-2:30 PM) mean many shops close. Unlike Marrakech, Fes artisans still produce for locals, not just tourists - you'll find authentic, high-quality goods here[citation:1][citation:4][citation:5].
