The spiritual heart of Fes - a holy mausoleum with gilded decoration and nougat sellers outside.
The Zawiya (mausoleum) of Moulay Idriss II is the spiritual heart of Fes and one of Morocco's holiest sites. Idriss II established the first imperial capital in Fes in 789 CE, growing it into a political and cultural powerhouse. His tomb remains an important pilgrimage site, particularly during the joyful Mawlid Moussem festival celebrating the Prophet's birthday. While only Muslims can enter the tomb chamber itself, the exterior of the zawiya is a wonder to behold - decorated in the finest gilded zouak (painted woodwork), intricate lace-like stucco (plasterwork), and gleaming filigreed lanterns that create a magical atmosphere in the surrounding incense-scented streets come nightfall. The zaouia's green-tiled minaret and pyramidal roof are distinctive features visible from across the medina. The surrounding square has candy-colored carts selling traditional Fassi nougat (a sweet made with honey, nuts, and sesame), a local specialty that symbolizes generosity and hospitality. Non-Muslims can walk up to the entrance and admire the elaborate bronze doors, the intricate tilework, and the atmosphere - one of the most spiritually charged places in Morocco. The festival of Moulay Idriss in August sees the area illuminated and filled with celebrations[citation:7].
