The medina's main bustling shopping street lined with shops, food stalls, and artisans.
Talaa Kebira (the Great Slope or Rising Road) is the medina's main commercial artery, running from Bab Bou Jeloud (Blue Gate) eastward into the heart of Fes el-Bali. This bustling, pedestrian-only thoroughfare descends gently toward the Qarawiyyin area, lined with hundreds of shops, food stalls, artisan workshops, and historic buildings. You'll find everything: hand-painted ceramics, leather bags and babouche slippers, wood carvings, embroidered textiles, Berber jewelry, brass lanterns, carpets, and antiques. Interspersed are bakeries baking khobz (traditional round bread), spice shops with pyramids of vivid powders, and stalls selling fresh pomegranate juice (often with orange blossom water added). The street narrows as you progress deeper into the medina, with the architecture getting older and more labyrinthine. Donkeys and mules still carry goods here - a constant reminder of the medieval nature of Fes. The side alleys lead to hidden madrasas, funduqs, and riads. On Talaa Kebira, you'll be approached frequently by shopkeepers - a polite 'la shukran' (no thank you) suffices. The parallel street, Talaa Seghira (the Small Slope), runs roughly parallel and is quieter with more residential sections. Walking the entire Talaa Kebira from Bab Bou Jeloud to the Qarawiyyin area takes about 20-30 minutes without stops, but allow 2-3 hours for shopping and detours[citation:8][citation:10].
