The only US National Historic Landmark on foreign soil, with art, history, and Paul Bowles exhibits.
The Tangier American Legation Museum is a unique piece of history - the first American public property outside the United States and the only US National Historic Landmark on foreign soil. Formed in 1786 when the United States and Morocco signed a Treaty of Peace and Friendship, it is the longest unbroken treaty relationship in US history. The museum is tucked away in the medina and often overlooked by tourists, making it a hidden gem. The building itself is a fascinating mix of Moroccan and American architectural styles, with exhibits that include: historical documents and diplomatic correspondence dating back to George Washington, a wing dedicated to American author Paul Bowles (who settled in Tangier in 1947), the famous 'Moroccan Mona Lisa' (James McBey's portrait of Zohra), contemporary Moroccan art, and fascinating cultural exhibits tracing the long-standing relationship between the two nations. The museum's rooftop terrace offers excellent medina views. Animal lovers may also enjoy the attached Donkey Museum, a sweet collection of artwork and donkey-inspired products dedicated to supporting and sharing the story of man's hard-working companion.
