A white-and-blue coastal town with colorful murals, Atlantic beaches, and an arts festival.
Asilah is a charming coastal town located about 25 km (40 minutes) south of Tangier, known for its whitewashed and blue-trimmed medina, stunning Atlantic beaches, and vibrant street art. Each August, Asilah hosts the Asilah Arts Festival, when local and international artists cover the medina's walls with spectacular murals that remain until the following year. The result is an open-air gallery - every street corner reveals a new painting, from abstract compositions to figurative works and Moroccan motifs. The medina itself is pristine, with blue and white houses, small art galleries, and relaxed cafes. Outside the medina, the Atlantic beaches stretch for kilometers, good for walking and swimming (though water can be cool). Asilah has a long history dating back to the Roman period, with impressive towers and ramparts still standing. The seafood here is exceptional - waterfront restaurants serve fresh catch of the day at reasonable prices. The town is easily reached by train, taxi, or organized tour from Tangier. For the best experience, time your visit to see the murals (any time) or attend the festival (August). Asilah is considerably more relaxed than Tangier - perfect for a peaceful day by the sea.[citation:6]
