Morocco's oldest lighthouse at Africa's northwestern tip where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean.
Cap Spartel is the most northwestern point of mainland Africa, a rugged peninsula located 14 km west of Tangier city center where the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea meet. This dramatic headland offers panoramic views of the converging waters - the cobalt Atlantic on one side and turquoise Mediterranean on the other. On clear days, you can see the Spanish coastline across the Strait of Gibraltar. The iconic Hispano-Moorish lighthouse, built in 1864, is the oldest lighthouse in Morocco and appears on the back of the 200 dirham banknote. The lighthouse features a small museum where visitors can learn about maritime navigation history. The surrounding area includes cliffs, beaches, a forest, and a nature reserve - perfect for walks, enjoying sunsets, and exploring coastal trails. The cape is approximately 1,000 feet above sea level. There are cafes near the lighthouse where you can refresh before continuing to the nearby Caves of Hercules, just 5 km away. The scene is particularly spectacular at sunset when the sky transforms into shades of orange, pink, and purple over the meeting of two seas.
