The photogenic 'Blue City' in the Rif Mountains - a popular day trip from Tangier.
Chefchaouen (often called Chaouen) is the famous 'Blue City' of Morocco, nestled in the Rif Mountains about 2 to 2.5 hours south of Tangier (approximately 115 km). Every building in the medina is painted in varying shades of blue - from powder blue to deep indigo - creating one of the most photogenic towns in the world. The tradition is said to have started with Jewish refugees in the 15th century who believed blue reminded them of heaven and God. The relaxed atmosphere is a welcome contrast to larger cities - no touts, no aggressive salespeople, just locals going about their day. Highlights include: the Spanish Mosque overlooking the city (20-minute hike for spectacular sunset views), Plaza Uta el-Hammam (the main square with cafes and the Grand Mosque with its distinctive octagonal minaret), the Kasbah Museum (with a lovely Andalusian garden), the waterfall at Ras El Maa on the edge of town, and endless blue-painted alleys perfect for photography. Chefchaouen is also known for its distinctive wool garments, hand-woven blankets, and local goat cheese. The drive itself is scenic, passing through green valleys and rural villages. While a long day (approx 12 hours round trip), it's unforgettable. The blue walls photograph best in morning or late afternoon light.[citation:6]
