Historic Petit Socco square with old-school cafes, backgammon players, and a 1930s cinema.
The Petit Socco is the historic heart of Tangier's medina action - a small square surrounded by old-school cafes, shops, and the ever-present energy of local life. This was the epicenter of Tangier's International Zone era (1923-1956), when spies, smugglers, writers, and artists mingled freely in its cafes. The Gran Café Central (also known as Café Central) is the most famous of these, with outdoor tables that spill onto the square, perfect for watching the world go by. Order a 'nous nous' (half espresso, half milk - the name means 'half-half' in Moroccan Arabic) or strong mint tea, and imagine yourself as one of the literary stars of the 1940s-1960s who made this their second home. The neighboring Café Tingis is equally historic. Across the square, you'll find the entrance to the Grand Mosque and the Church of the Immaculate Conception. The square is also where locals gather to play the ancient game of 'shesh-besh' (backgammon) - a fascinating spectacle for visitors. This area still captures the eclectic, slightly bohemian atmosphere that made Tangier famous. The nearby Cinema Rif, a 1930s Art Deco landmark, has been restored as the Cinémathèque de Tanger, showing independent films with a retro cafe.
