Relaxed souks with spices, ceramics, carpets, and contemporary Moroccan design boutiques.
Tangier's souks are more relaxed and less aggressive than those in Fes or Marrakech, making them a pleasant shopping experience. The action centers around Grand Socco (officially Place du 9 Avril 1947), the buzzy square that joins the old city to the new. Here you'll find a vibrant street market selling fresh produce, spices, and local goods. From Grand Socco, the souk extends into the medina's winding alleys, with shops selling: hand-painted pottery and ceramics, Berber silver jewelry, leather babouche (slippers), hand-knotted carpets, locally made textiles, spices in pyramids of vivid colors, traditional Fassi ceramics, and much more. For contemporary Moroccan design, check out Las Chicas (the city's original concept store), Kasbah Collective (locally designed clothes, jewelry, and homeware), and Au Fil de Tanger. In the Ville Nouvelle, Habibi Burton and New Tangier create high-end designs using traditional crafts. For T-shirts and casual wear, Rock da Kasbah has a cool collection. Bargaining is expected but more relaxed than other Moroccan cities - start at about half the asking price. The souk is most active from 9 AM to 1 PM and again from 4 PM to 8 PM. Friday prayers mean many shops close around 1-2:30 PM.[citation:6]
Best experienced during: Morning 9 AM-1 PM, Late afternoon 4-8 PM
