A UNESCO-listed Andalusian 'White City' with Spanish-influenced architecture and authentic medina.
Tetouan, known as the 'White City' for its gleaming whitewashed buildings, is located about 65 km east of Tangier (approximately 1 hour by car). This UNESCO World Heritage site is an exceptionally complete Andalusian-medina that was the capital of northern Morocco for centuries. Founded in the 13th century, expanded by Andalusian refugees after the Reconquista, Tetouan's architecture is distinctly Spanish-influenced with narrow streets, white facades with green shutters, and intricately carved wooden doors. The medina is surrounded by five fortified gates. The Ethnographic Museum, housed in a former palace, displays traditional Moroccan arts, weapons, and the crown jewels of the last sultan of Tetouan. The Archaeological Museum contains artifacts from Roman and Phoenician periods. The city's charm lies in its lived-in authenticity - it feels less tourist-oriented than Fes or Marrakech. The art school, Escuela de Artes y Oficios, continues the city's tradition of craftsmanship. Tetouan is also the gateway to the Mediterranean coast, with the beaches of M'diq and Martil nearby. The city is easily reached by grand taxi or private tour from Tangier. Allow a full day to explore the medina and museums. The white city stands in beautiful contrast to Chefchaouen's blue.[citation:8]
